A closer look at grain, finish, and the everyday character of wood.

Look at a larger sample

A small swatch rarely shows the full variation of a timber surface. Ask to see the grain over a larger area and discuss how boards or veneers will be arranged. Consistency and natural variation create very different effects.

Consider the finish

The same wood can feel very different with oil, lacquer, or stain. Review a finished sample under the light where it will be used, and ask the supplier how the surface should be cleaned and repaired.

Design for the long term

Think about edges, joints, and parts that may need replacing. A beautiful timber element is more useful when its care requirements fit the household or workplace that will live with it.
